EVAN IFEKOYA ~ RESONANT FREQUENCIES

Evan Ifekoya lebt und arbeitet in London als Künstler*in und Energiearbeiter*in. Ifekoyas Schaffen konfrontiert mit Hilfe von Klang, Text, Video und Performance bestehende Machtsysteme und -institutionen, um Erfahrungen und Stimmen bislang marginalisierter Gruppen in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen und ihnen Vorrang zu verleihen. In dieser Praxis ist Kunst ein Ort, an dem Ressourcen neu verteilt und verhandelt und die impliziten Regeln und Hierarchien öffentlicher und sozialer Räume hinterfragt werden.

Das Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zürich zeigt im Frühjahr 2022 Ifekoyas Klanginstallation ~ Resonant Frequencies. Das Erdgeschoss des Museums ist dadurch in ein multisensorisches Environment verwandelt, in dem Besucherinnen und Besucher den transzendenten Anteilen in sich nachspüren können. Klang spielt eine wichtige Rolle in Ifekoyas Praxis, die von dem Wunsch getragen ist, dem Wesen von Sein und Wissen innerhalb und ausserhalb der visuellen Wahrnehmung nachzuspüren.

Dieses Buch, das anlässlich der Ausstellung erscheint, dokumentiert die Installation in intensiv farbigen Abbildungen. Diese werden begleitet von einer Einführung des Ausstellungskurators Michael Birchall, einem Gespräch des Kritikers und Forschers KJ Abudu mit Evan Ifekoya über deren künstlerische Praxis sowie einem kritischen Essay über Rassismus und spirituelle Praxis in der Kunstwelt der britisch-kenianischen Künstlerin Grace Ndiritu.

Evan Ifekoya is an artist and energy worker who, through sound, text, video, and performance, confronts existing systems and institutions of power in order to recenter and prioritize the experiences and voices of those previously marginalized. Their practice considers art as a site where resources can be both redistributed and renegotiated, whilst challenging the implicit rules and hierarchies of public and social spaces.

In an exhibition at Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in 2022, Ifekoya explores a cosmology of healing through sound, stillness, and the creation of intentional space—a site for reflection and contemplation as part of a large installation inside the museum. Through investigations with sonic and visual artists as well as instrument-makers, the show focuses on self-care and healing. It also showcases Ifekoya’s ongoing investigation into the somatic experience of listening, the healing potential of sound, and the spiritual dimension of sexuality.

This book, published in conjunction with the exhibition, features contributions from artists, curators and writers, and by Ifekoya themselves. In an interview with the critic and researcher KJ Abudu, the artist reflects on their journey to producing sound-led work, and their recent exploration of drumming and object making.
