Seit 1995 arbeitet Paul Noble (*1963) an monumentalen Graphitzeichnungen einer fiktiven Stadt mit dem Namen Nobson Newtown - diese verbinden Gebäude und Orte, welche die Geographie, Geschichte und Mythologie von Nobson Newtown ausmachen.
In seinen Zeichnungen, Skulpturen und Filmen vereint Noble minutiöses Handwerk mit der politisch motivierten Vision, die urbanen „textscapes“ einer dysfunktionalen „Newtown“ zu schaffen. Paul Noble bringt in seiner Synthese von Zeichnung, Architektur, Philosophie und Satire so unterschiedliche Quellen zusammen wie chinesische Kalligrafie, Sufi-Gedichte, die Architektur der Moderne oder Tierrechte. Diese Herangehensweise erinnert in ihrer Intensität an Gemälde von Bosch und Piranesi und die Respektlosigkeit in den Comics von Robert Crumb oder Viz.
In der ersten Monografie beschäftigen sich die Kunsthistorikerin Ingrid Rowland und Anthony Spira, Kurator der Whichapel Gallery, mit dem Kontext von Nobles Werk. Editiert von Heike Munder, Direktorin des migros museum, steuert der Künstler Fotos, Zeichnungen und begleitendes Material bei, das einen Einblick in seine Arbeitsmethoden bietet. Eine illustrierte Chronologie und Bibliografie liefern biografische Informationen.

Since 1995 Paul Noble (*1963) has worked on monumental pencil drawings of a fictitious town called Nobson Newtown – they link buildings and places that constitute the geography, history and mythology of Nobson Newtown.
In his drawings, sculptures, and films, he combines meticulous craft with a political vision to produce the urban "textscapes" of a dysfunctional "Newtown." A synthesis of drawing, architecture, philosophy, and satire, Noble’s project brings together such disparate sources as Chinese calligraphy, Sufi poetry, modernist architecture, and animal rights in a manner that recalls the intensity of paintings by Bosch and Piranesi, and the irreverence of Robert Crumb and Viz comics. In this first monograph on the artist, eminent art historian Ingrid Rowland and Whitechapel curator Anthony Spira explore the cultural context of Noble’s recent work. The artist brings together preparatory and associated material, edited by Migros Museum director Heike Munder, that presents snapshots into his working methods. An illustrated chronology and bibliography provide biographical background.
