STEPHEN G. RHODES: APOLOGIES

Die raumfüllenden Installationen des amerikanischen Künstlers Stephen G. Rhodes (*1977, Houston, USA, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und New Orleans) zeichnen sich durch eine Zusammenführung unterschiedlicher Medien aus und basieren auf Quellen aus Geschichte und Kultur. Rhodes schafft eigene, ruhelos-elliptische Systeme, in denen er Themen wie Verdrängung und Trauma verhandelt. Für seine erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung in Europa im Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst hat Rhodes eine neue Rauminstallation realisiert, die als Ausgangspunkt Aby Warburgs kanonischen Vortrag «Das Schlangenritual» nimmt, den dieser 1923 in der Heilanstalt Bellevue in Kreuzlingen hielt. Darin untersuchte er das Schlangenritual der Hopi-Ureinwohner aus kunsthistorischer und religionswissenschaftlich-anthropologischer Perspektive und proklamierte damit eine moderne Kulturwissenschaft.
Diese erste monografische Publikation zum Werk von Stephen G. Rhodes bietet erstmals einen detaillierten Gesamteindruck über seine Arbeiten der letzten 10 Jahre. Erweitert wird die umfassende Werkschau durch literatur- und medientheoretische Betrachtungen sowie film- und bildwissenschaftliche Beiträge zu Rhodes‘ Schaffen von Brian Price (Filmwissenschaftler), John David Rhodes (Literatur- und Bildwissenschaftler, Mitbegründer von World Picture), Laurence A. Rickels (Literatur- und Medientheoretiker) und Keston Sutherland (Dichter und Literaturkritiker) sowie ein Gespräch mit Stephen G. Rhodes von Raphael Gygax.

The sprawling installations of the American artist Stephen G. Rhodes (b. Houston, Texas, 1977; lives and works in Berlin and New Orleans) combine a variety of media and are based on historical and cultural sources. Rhodes creates distinctive restless and elliptical systems in which he addresses issues such as repression and trauma. For his first solo show at a European art institution at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Rhodes has realized a completely new installation drawing on the famous “Lecture on Serpent Ritual: A Travel Report” Aby Warburg (1866–1929) delivered in 1923 at the Bellevue psychiatric hospital in Kreuzlingen, where he was a patient. Warburg examined the serpent ritual of the Hopi in the perspectives of art history, religious studies, and anthropology, thus proclaiming a modern science of culture.

This first monograph on Stephen G. Rhodes gives a detailed insight into the artist’s work of the past ten years. This extensive retrospective/survey is complemented by essays from the perspectives of literary and media theory as well as film theory and the visual arts by Brian Price (associate professor of film and visual studies), John David Rhodes (reader in literature and visual culture, founding coeditor of the journal World Picture), Laurence A. Rickels (American literary and media theorist) and Keston Sutherland (poet and literary critic) and a conversation with the artist by Raphael Gygax (Curator, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst).
