DETERIORATION, THEY SAID, 2009

Entitled DETERIORATION, THEY SAID, the publication brings together the American artists Cory Arcangel, Jessica Ciocci & Jacob Ciocci / Paper Rad, Shana Moulton, and Ryan Trecartin & Lizzie Fitch. In their works, these artists all create an exaggerated, colour-saturated aesthetic which, with its excessive density of symbols, responds to the consumerist state of Western society. Within their visual spaces, the four artists engage with a culture of excess, articulating their critique through a form of appropriation whilst simultaneously unleashing a veritable deluge of images. In the tradition of experimental film and ‘Scatter Art’, they explore potential unconventional narrative patterns and the dismantling of stereotypes. The video works are often presented in sculptural settings, in which fragments of popular culture are amalgamated with handcrafted forms to create an ‘intermedial Gesamtkunstwerk’.
