NEXT FLAG: THE AFRICAN SNIPER READER AN ANTHOLOGY

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Dadaist and Surrealist movements brought about aesthetic revolutions. The poet Léopold Sédar Senghor coined the term "guerrillas entrenched behind the enemy lines" for their strategic approach - those who, as an avant-garde, initiate a new world order on unsecured territory. The initiators of "NEXT FLAG – an african sniper project for european spaces" use this image of Senghor's guerrillas to express their desire for a new artistic and social space. The fact that the initiators are Africans can be traced back to the concept of historical materialism coined by Marx. This states that changes in circumstances cannot come from those who have benefited from the contradictions of this world. NEXT FLAG aims to present contemporary African art in European exhibition spaces in an act of post-postcolonial occupation. The project thus attempts to bring together existing contradictions under a new – the next – flag; not in the sense of a unification, but as the establishment of a new emotional geography detached from physical realities.
