RE-VISIONS OF THE DISPLAY. EXHIBITION SCENARIOS, THEIR READINGS AND THEIR AUDIENCE

This anthology of international contributions discusses contexts of exhibition practice and is aimed at interested readers and cultural professionals from various areas of exhibition production. The focus is on an examination of the exhibition display, which is not only regarded as the design of the "surface" and of impression, but as a meaning-making element among others, as part of a media network in which all elements contribute consciously or unconsciously to the production of meanings. Exhibiting is analyzed as a cultural practice that conveys values and norms – and thus implicitly ideological concepts. The inclusion of the display in a critical "reading" of exhibitions makes it possible to make previously overlooked relationships visible, be they relationships between object and space, text and image, wayfinding and audience, or information and emotional appeal. Further topics include sensory overload and participation, staging and resistant reception, media of mediation and information, as well as the ennoblement and contextualization of exhibition objects.
