Geschichten von Bewegung und Verdrängung

Über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg hat sich Renée Green in ihrer außergewöhnlichen multimedialen Kunstpraxis fortlaufend mit der Beziehung zwischen Ästhetik und Macht auseinandergesetzt. Ihre Filme, Skulpturen, Schriften, Fotografien, Druckgrafiken und Soundarbeiten untersuchen und beleuchten unterrepräsentierte Geschichten von Migration, Vertreibung, Ethnografie und kultureller Repräsentation. Dieser außergewöhnliche Künstlerkatalog zeigt Greens Werk in seinen vielen Facetten und kombiniert frühe und undokumentierte Kunstwerke mit neueren Arbeiten, begleitet von einer Vielzahl von Texten neuer Autoren, die ihr Kunstwerk für ein zeitgenössisches Publikum rekontextualisieren. Das Buch erlaubt die einzigartige Einsicht in einen Prozess, in dem Sehen und Wissen in neue Konstellationen gebracht werden.

RENÉE GREEN (*1959) studierte in Middleton, New York und Cambridge. Mit ihrer einzigartigen Mischung aus naturwissenschaftlichen Studien und künstlerischer Ästhetik wurde sie eine weltweit bekannte Künstlerin. Sie wirkte als Professorin an der Akademie der Künste in Wien und dem San Francisco Art Institute und aktuell am MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology.

Dieses Buch wird co-publiziert vom Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD und den KW Institute for Contemporary Art im Rahmen von Renée Greens parallelen Ausstellungen in der daadgalerie und im KW, Berlin, Oktober 2021.

Histories of Movement and Displacement

Since the late 1980s, Renée Green’s practice has imagined and expanded the ways in which art can give form to underwritten histories, collective memory, and circuits of cultural exchange. Her writing, installations, films, digital media, and sound works continue to trace and interrogate the power of cultural institutions and their relationships with language, knowledge, and constitutions of selfhood, while at the same time indicating other ways of being and becoming.

This artist’s catalogue extensively illustrates Green’s previously undocumented early work alongside recent installations, personal ephemera and excerpts from fiction selected by the artist. Essays by a new constellation of writers relate Green’s work to legacies of migration and displacement, language and access, as well as alternative approaches to reading and being read.

RENÉE GREEN (*1959) is an artist, writer, and filmmaker known for her highly layered and formally complex multimedia installations in which ideas, perception, and experience are examined from myriad perspectives. Green’s exhibitions, videos and films have been seen throughout the world in museums, festivals, and art institutions, highlighting her unique approach to natural sciences, history, and aesthetics. She is a Professor at the Art, Culture, and Technology program at MIT.

This book is co-published by KW Institute for Contemporary Art, DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, and Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, on the occasion of the exhibition Renée Green: Inevitable Distances, 2021–2022.
